Module 12 - What is there for to rejoice if you have the intellectual property on something? Would it be a great instrument to the economic growth of the country? Or you are just the sole beneficiary of the fruits you have reaped from what you have sowed? Explain.

If you have the intellectual property on something, there is the presence of pride for oneself knowing that you owned something that actually comes from no one, but you; also the fact that there is money in having an intellectual property. These are just some of the hundred reasons to rejoice on having an intellectual property on something.
You would not just benefit solely with what you have reaped since it could also be a great instrument to the economic growth of the country. If you happened to have a great, innovative and protected published idea and the government would support that idea of yours, the country would then grow economically.

Module 11 - Is it ethical to blog both awful and pleasant experiences with your ex-girlfriend / ex-boyfriend? Discuss.

Awful or pleasant experiences with your ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend are just some of the experiences that you both should be keeping within the two of you. Blogging these kind of things therefore is unethical for me.
Blogging on something you longed to express is not bad, but if it could harm someone, then this could be a very apparent reason for the act to be bad and unethical. We are all free to express anything, just don’t harm others on the things you’re expressing. Choose what you express because words, once spoken or written, could greatly affect someone in any other ways. Think before you act!

Module 11 - Facebook’s marketing director, who happens to be Mark Zuckerberg’s sister, proposed last year that banning online anonymity would help curtail cyber-bullying and Internet harassment. Then-Google CEO Eric Schmidt made a similar observation in year 2010, noting that “privacy is incredibly important” but “not the same thing as anonymity.” If banning is already imposed or will be imposed would this stop annoying comments against someone freely posted by an anonymous FB user? Is this ethical? Is this against the freedom of speech? Support your answer.

If banning will be imposed or is already imposed, I believe that annoying comments against someone would be curtailed but could not stop it. It could be curtailed since if anonymity will be banned, then users will act formally on social networking sites coz if they don’t it could harm their identity.

The act of posting annoying comments against someone is unethical because it could harm other people. And so, the act of banning online anonymity is an ethical act. I would agree that it could prevent and curtail cyber-bullying.

Banning anonymity is not against the freedom of speech. On my opinion, it is just protecting social networking site users to be cyber-bullied.

Module 10 - Is social justice evident in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Corona? Discuss.

In the Chief Justice Corona's impeachment trial, it focuses about the his property that may have come from illegal means like corruption. He was accused guilty of graft and corruption.
In relation to social justice, graft and corruption is very much against it since social justice by definition is "referring to the idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being" (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_justice).
Considering that corruption violates the aim of social justice for the reason that it does not  show equality to the society, then social justice issue is evident.
The money that has been corrupted may have been used to a more productive, useful and helpful projects of the government for the welfare of the many and not just for personal and greedy reasons. This thing makes social justice issue evident in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Corona.

Module 9 - In terms of privacy, how far will you go for the sake of social justice?

To show social justice and equality, i would not restrict other people accessing information about something I do. i would not keep it private and readily disclose it publicly if it is necessary and needed so badly for something that could show social justice. But not my private information since it would be too risky for me if I do so.

Module 8 - What computer abuse would you like to eradicate? How would you do it?

Worms and viruses is one of the computer abuses that I like to eradicate. This is so because viruses and worms cause damages on files and computer systems readily without even the computer owner knowing it. It just gives computer users headaches and problems since important files may get lost and be infected. Since obviously, this abuse can’t be eradicated, I would just simply try to get rid of it. I would do it by installing anti-virus softwares on my computer and scanning my computer at a regular basis. This way, I can at least get rid of worms and viruses.

Module 7 - There are still enormous sources of misinformation on the world wide web, so how can you determine what is good information and what is bad information?

Good information comes from reliable sources, I believe; bad or unreliable information however comes from just anybody messing around. With this, we really have to be very careful on choosing what information to believe. To determine which of these readily available pieces of information are good or bad, we have to verify first its sources since enormous sources of misinformation are still very much available and scattered on the world wide web for many different reasons, and some of these reasons is to deceive people, to fraud and many other illegal activities.

Module 5 - Today, it is a fact that a lot of Filipino women are into online GOLD digging. Suppose one of them is your sister who happens to be your family's breadwinner. What would you do on this matter?

Yes it is a fact that a lot of Filipino women are into online GOLD digging nowadays. But if suppose it happens that one of them is my sister, I would definitely make her stop what she’s doing, she’s my sister and I don’t want her to do such thing, I want her to be happy and be respected. And if she be the breadwinner of our family, then the more she has to be righteous on whatever she does to earn money. It would just hurt us, her family, learning that the money she have providing us for our daily expenses comes from something unethical, sacrificing her dignity and happiness. My family would definitely not allow that to happen. And so, if it happens to be like it, I would talk with her and make her stop what she's been doing. Selling oneself online is absolutely not the only way to earn money. There are lots of jobs available anywhere. We just need to be determined and courageous to find a good job that suit our personality, that could sustain our daily living and that would make yourself and your loved ones proud.

Module 6 - If you are to choose your top 3 difficult-to-follow computer ethics commandments, what are these? Explain why.

If I were to choose top three computer ethics commandments that are difficult-to-follow, these would be the following:

·        Thou shalt not snoop around other people’s files.

This is because sometimes, my curiosity would really come out and so making me snoop and browse on other people's file. But as of now; I am trying myself not to do this thing anymore since I know that this act is unethical.

·        Thou shalt not use or copy software for which you have not paid.

As a student, sometimes we have to do this because of the need to have one. Since we cannot still afford to buy the licensed one, but little by little I'm trying hard to adapt and have the Open Source Software.

·        Thou shalt not use other people’s computer resources without authorization.

Sometimes, I use computer resources from other people without asking them first permission if I can do so. But now, I see to it that I ask them first to show respect.

Module 6 - Suppose you are to add 2 more commandments to the existing 10 commandments of computer ethics, what are these? Are these 2 new commandments of equal importance to the existing ones? Discuss.

1. Thou shalt use the computer for the purpose of benefiting others by making their works easy and not the other way around.
2. Thou shalt not use computer to engaged in any computer-related crimes.

Module 6 - What is ransomware? Which of the 10 computer ethics commandments is/are violated by ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of  malware used for data kidnapping, an exploit in which the attacker encrypts the victim's data and demands payment for the decryption key. A ransomware program can be installed from an e-mail attachment, an infected program, or a compromised or malicious Web site. Malware used for this purpose is sometimes called a cryptovirus, cryptotrojan or cryptoworm. (http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci1180020,00.html)
The computer ethics commandments which are violated by ransomeware are the following:

·        Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people.

·        Thou shalt not interfere with other people’s computer work.

·        Thou shalt not use a computer to steal.

·        Thou shalt not appropriate other people’s intellectual output.

·        Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect.

module 4- How often do you make an effort to practice your strengths and virtues? (A virtue is a trait you cultivate. Ex: patience, generosity kindness). Are these traits key to a happy life? Discuss.

I make sure to practice my strengths and virtues as often as possible. I still have to practice these traits since I know for myself that patience is still not hundred percent in me and so practicing and cultivating this would be a great achievement on my part. For example, everyday, I always try to be patience (heaven knows that), so I could be happy throughout the day but still there are times I broke out and lose my temper for some reasons I could not avoid. This trait is the one I surely have to focus on practicing and cultivating since many people would be affected if I would not do so and even I would suffer more the consequences. And yes, the traits stated above are keys to a happy life. It is because having these virtues would allow us to achieve good things in life.

module 4 - For some, happiness relies on money. In some cases, hacking means money. Would you do hacking it if its outcome is a sure happiness of your family? What particular Aristotle theory contradicts this concept? Discuss.

One of Aristotle’s theory states that “Happiness depends on acquiring a moral character, where one displays the virtue of courage, generosity, justice, friendship, and citizenship in one’s life. These virtues involve striking a balance or “mean” between an excess and a deficiency.” And this theory contradicts the case stated above. Hacking is unethical, and you could not acquire moral values or display the virtues in life upon doing unethical things, whatever that may be, even though it may cause you and your loved ones in life happy. And yes, it is true that for some and for some cases happiness relies on money but real and ultimate happiness comes from the people around showing their love and care for you, being contented of your family being together, united and laughing together. It does not come from money alone.

Module 3 - “ We are all here on earth to help others. What I cant figure out is what the others are here for.“ -W.H.Auden. Discuss

It is very true that we are here on earth to help others.  “We live to serve and not to be served” as one of the bible’s preaching says. As humans, anybody who had helped anyone would surely be happy. True and real people are those who want and who are willing to serve others without expecting something in return, I call them achievers. Proud people, however, are those who wanted to be served and help only those who they know could give back something to them.

On my perspective, “others” are also here on earth for the very same reason of helping others. I guess this have to be it to make the world a great place. It is good to live a life being true to yourself with the absence of greediness and competence with others. It spares you on worrying on something not essential and important in life.  So, why worry and be curious on what other people have to do on their existence? As long as you live according to God’s will and practice what you have preached, you’re already an achiever. If one is really willing to help, he/she would not ask for something in return neither he/she asked for anybody to do the same things as he/she does.  We should do things willingly. We should not do it to impress, instead we should do things for one good reason-and that is to help others and eventually make them happy because there is no greater happiness than seeing someone joyful because of what you did.

Module 3 - Ethical egoists think that people will be happiest if they look out for themselves and not concern themselves with others but is this where true human happiness lies? Discuss.

Sometimes, we could notice ourselves being so greedy. We only think of our own happiness not concerning ourselves what others feel on our deed. We sometimes say to ourselves “I’m happy with what I’m doing. I don’t care on what others may say”, this is being true and in a sense, a good thing but on the other side, selfishness is present. When your deed could already greatly affect anybody around you, especially if it could harm them and could hurt them, you are already being an egoist. You may be happy but what is happiness if you are aware that someone out there is suffering on what you’re doing. Would you still be happy and confident about it? Would you still be on your happiest? I’m sure that you would not be if you know you are hurting someone, instead you’d feel guilty. So, if we really want to be happy and be on your happiest, we should not just look for ourselves but we should also think and concern ourselves with others.

Module 3 - What are the roots of egoism? Where does it come from? What do egotistical people fear?

People act and work for their own interest and desire to achieve self-satisfaction and happiness. Egoism roots from envy, insecurity and greediness of oneself and therefore, roots from our very own self. Envy, insecurity, jealousy, and greediness arise when we feel that others are far better than us which eventually leads to competence. In short, and in reality, we don’t want to be surpassed by others. We compete with others unconsciously and if we think that we already have something better than that of our competitor, we feel satisfied and happy even though we have already hurt others consciously and unconsciously upon achieving that something.

Egotistical people fear of not attaining what they desire or want. They fear of losing something which could make them think that someone is better than them because of that lose and what they don’t have. They also fear that someone could surpass them.

Module 2 - If you are to become part of the VSU team who will formulate a handbook like that of Virginia University, give at least 2 policies that you want to be implemented in VSU or even just for CS students like you, regarding computing .

If I were to become part of the VSU team who will formulate a handbook like that of Virginia University, I would give these policies for implementation not just for CS students, but for all students, regarding computing:

Policy I
Downloading movies, audios and any other downloadable files during office hours that could surely affect VSU’s network bandwidth and would result to slow connectivity to the Internet, is prohibited.

Punishment
Students’ right to connect to the Internet using any VSU’s network will be suspended for one whole semester.

Policy II
For VSU students, using social networking sites during working hours is prohibited.

Punishment
Suspension of student’s computing rights and access to VSU’s online resources for 1 month.

Policy III
Anyone caught using somebody else’s ID and password in accessing online University classes, modules and exercises whether be it given to him/her by owner’s will or not, is punishable.

Punishment
Whoever caught using somebody else’s account will be suspended for the whole semester.

Module 2 - According to the definition of ethics, it can be connected to the norms or custom of the society. What could be ethical to one could be unethical to another. If this is the case, in which ethics seem to be subjective in nature, why is there a need to study computer ethics at all? Support your opinion with facts.

There are said to be 6 justifications for the study of computer ethics from http://www.cs.bgsu.edu/ maner/ethicomp95/keynote3-LEVELS.html. These are as follows:
  1. We should study computer ethics because doing so will make us behave like responsible professionals
  2.  We should study computer ethics because doing so will teach us how to avoid computer abuse and catastrophes;
  3. We should study computer ethics because the advance of computing technology will continue to create temporary policy vacuums;
  4. We should study computer ethics because the use of computing permanently transforms certain ethical issues to the degree that their alterations require independent study;
  5. We should study computer ethics because the use of computing technology creates, and will continue to create, novel ethical issues that require special study.; and
  6. We should study computer ethics because the set of novel and transformed issues is large enough and coherent enough to define a new field.
So, with regards to the above enumerated reasons and justifications, on my opinion, there is a need to study computer ethics to have clarification to all the computer users around the globe about the limitations of its use. Although computers may help us in many ways and makes our daily living simple and easy, if this technology is used for personal satisfaction without considering its effect to many other users , most especially if it could harm and affect badly other people personally or professionally, then ethical issue on using computers should really be attended seriously. So basically, for me, computer ethics should be studied to display fairness, cleanliness, professionalism and being responsible in using computers.

Module 2 - There are 4 types of non-jural law. Divine, natural, moral and physical. If you are to practice just one type of the non-jural law for the entire existence of your life, what would it be and why?

If I were to practice just one type of non-jural law for the entire existence of my life, I would choose Divine law. It is because living divinely means living righteously. Obviously, all other types of the non-jural law 's main message, purpose and objective is the righteousness of a person. So when I leave according to the will of God, I will be observing and would be aware of what is righteous from not and eventually, I would be conscious of the things that I'll be doing all the days of my life. With this, I will avoid doing wrong
