Module 3 - “ We are all here on earth to help others. What I cant figure out is what the others are here for.“ -W.H.Auden. Discuss

It is very true that we are here on earth to help others.  “We live to serve and not to be served” as one of the bible’s preaching says. As humans, anybody who had helped anyone would surely be happy. True and real people are those who want and who are willing to serve others without expecting something in return, I call them achievers. Proud people, however, are those who wanted to be served and help only those who they know could give back something to them.

On my perspective, “others” are also here on earth for the very same reason of helping others. I guess this have to be it to make the world a great place. It is good to live a life being true to yourself with the absence of greediness and competence with others. It spares you on worrying on something not essential and important in life.  So, why worry and be curious on what other people have to do on their existence? As long as you live according to God’s will and practice what you have preached, you’re already an achiever. If one is really willing to help, he/she would not ask for something in return neither he/she asked for anybody to do the same things as he/she does.  We should do things willingly. We should not do it to impress, instead we should do things for one good reason-and that is to help others and eventually make them happy because there is no greater happiness than seeing someone joyful because of what you did.

Module 3 - Ethical egoists think that people will be happiest if they look out for themselves and not concern themselves with others but is this where true human happiness lies? Discuss.

Sometimes, we could notice ourselves being so greedy. We only think of our own happiness not concerning ourselves what others feel on our deed. We sometimes say to ourselves “I’m happy with what I’m doing. I don’t care on what others may say”, this is being true and in a sense, a good thing but on the other side, selfishness is present. When your deed could already greatly affect anybody around you, especially if it could harm them and could hurt them, you are already being an egoist. You may be happy but what is happiness if you are aware that someone out there is suffering on what you’re doing. Would you still be happy and confident about it? Would you still be on your happiest? I’m sure that you would not be if you know you are hurting someone, instead you’d feel guilty. So, if we really want to be happy and be on your happiest, we should not just look for ourselves but we should also think and concern ourselves with others.

Module 3 - What are the roots of egoism? Where does it come from? What do egotistical people fear?

People act and work for their own interest and desire to achieve self-satisfaction and happiness. Egoism roots from envy, insecurity and greediness of oneself and therefore, roots from our very own self. Envy, insecurity, jealousy, and greediness arise when we feel that others are far better than us which eventually leads to competence. In short, and in reality, we don’t want to be surpassed by others. We compete with others unconsciously and if we think that we already have something better than that of our competitor, we feel satisfied and happy even though we have already hurt others consciously and unconsciously upon achieving that something.

Egotistical people fear of not attaining what they desire or want. They fear of losing something which could make them think that someone is better than them because of that lose and what they don’t have. They also fear that someone could surpass them.
